Stephanie Urquhart Quartet

Stephanie Urquhart is a jazz pianist based in Edmonton, with a playful voice and a demonstrative sound. With eclectic influences such as Esbjorn Svensson, The Bad Plus, Yoko Shimomura, and Radiohead, Urquhart's sound is adventurous and distinctive. Her passion to write and play fuels her drive to constantly challenge herself and expand her knowledge as a musician.

While growing up in Calgary Alberta, Stephanie was first taught to play piano by her older sister and continued to learn by teaching herself by ear. During Junior and Senior High School she received various awards and recognitions for musical achievement including Most Outstanding Grade 10 Musician awarded by Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School, was a one of four members to receive Most Outstanding Rhythm Section at the Alberta International Band Festival (AIBF), and was selected as a bassoonist for AIBF's Honour Band.

She went on to study jazz piano at MacEwan University in Edmonton, performing in their Jazz Combo, Big Band, and Percussion Ensemble. She also began performing regularly around town in various ensembles including jazz quartet Three Sun Sea. Through that ensemble, Urquhart had the opportunity to compose and perform frequently. Three Sun Sea released their CD, This is Not a Question, in May 2013 which was followed by performances at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, the Best of Edmonton Arts and Songwriting Talent festival (B.E.A.S.T.) and a western Canada tour. This is Not a Question was nominated for Jazz Recording of the year by the Edmonton Music Awards in 2014.

Now focusing on original material as well as a career as a solo recording and performing artist, Stephanie is completing her Bachelor of Music at MacEwan University while also writing for game company, Gauge.
