The Bitumont Players

Formed in 2007, The Bitumont Players are a mix of Alberta musicians who combine their diverse backgrounds to create a unique blend of original songs, including elements of folk, country, klezmer, and roots music with an occasional dash of strangeness. Their style features a wide range of instruments: banjo, mandolin, accordion, trombone, lap steel guitar, melodica, metallophone, and a musical saw complement a traditional core of guitar, bass, and drums.

David Martin, Natasha Platt, Mary Welin, and Robin Woywitka each contribute songs with themes that range from elegiac vignettes about prairie life to apocryphal tales of Adam and Eve, and everything else in between. Their name was inspired by the town of Bitumount, a site of early oil sands exploration, because, as divergent as their influences might be, the music of The Bitumont Players always expresses a connection to the people and history of Alberta.
