Aaron Parks

Aaron Parks is touring in support of his 2013 solo piano disc on ECM entitled “Arborescence”. A
former prodigy, he studied with Kenny Barron and then graduated from the Manhattan School of
Music at age 16. Parks spent several years in Terence Blanchard’s band before releasing his
own Blue Note debut, “Invisible Cinema”, described by BBC Online as “one of the great albums
of 2008”. He has a long association with Joshua Redman including a 2010 appearance with the
James Farm group at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival and with guitarist Kurt
Rosenwinkel with whom he performed at the 2013 EIJF.

“Arborescence” is the word for the way something grows, seeking and adaptive, like a tree. This
reflects how the recording occurred - the album’s music is the fruit of a session of solo pieces
developed in the moment like living things. It is ultimately something deeply individual and
intimate.

“A large portion of what I play will be like the songs on the record”, he says, but each song is its
own little world with its own internal sort of narrative. A major component of the performance will
also be a swing-oriented feel which reflects his current approach to playing after working in a
variety of contexts over the past few years.
