Devon Belcourt Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, he grew up listening to a variety of music, but he felt the greatest affinity for artists like Paul Simon and Jim Croce. Devon has been composing and performing for 5 years, having started playing music in high-school with friends, with whom he briefly formed a cover band called Big Mamma Jamma. Gradually, he began experimenting with the idea of writing his own material. Near the end of his senior year, he wrote a song titled ‘Ice Cream,’ which a friend suggested they play at their graduation ceremonies. The performance was a huge success! On that surging tide of success, supportive comments from a close friend and mentor helped to focus his passion. In these few short years, Devon has played a seemingly uncountable number of small shows, paying his dues in the finest tradition of young performers everywhere. Happily his efforts are beginning to draw attention and he recently has been booked in a few larger venues. Devon’s early compositions were primarily in English. Having been schooled in French Immersion, however, he is quite comfortable in the second language and began composing in French this past year. He has come to the conclusion that his best music springs from a well of personal experience, a lesson learned by many successful artists. Jim Croce himself struggled for a number of years trying to write a ‘hit song’ until one day a friend told him to ‘write what you know.’ Croce never looked back! Following a similar path, Devon Belcourt is writing honest, heartfelt, personal lyrics, accompanied by music that is accessible and stirring. In live performance, Devon gets lost in his music, careful to take his audience along on these explorations of his world. We should all keep our eyes and, particularly, our ears on young Mr. Belcourt. He is a promising and rising Canadian musical artist that is going places—with luck, he’ll take us with him!
