The Martingales are an independent Edmonton band that consist of members Andrew Beltaos on guitar and vocals, Angela Beltaos (Andrew's sister) on bass and vocals, and Matthew Emmett on drums. Their sound is described as "three-piece alternative folk-rock with a touch of surf", with influences such as Neil Young, Nirvana, Radiohead, and the Doors.
The band started playing together in April of 2007, and could be said to have formed in the Math Department at the University of Alberta, where all of them were either studying or working (Andrew and Matt were grad students, and all three have been teaching courses there as well). The band has played many shows around Edmonton in such venues as the Velvet Underground, the Pawn Shop, and the Urban Lounge.
The Martingales self-released their self-titled debut album in May of 2008. The CD is available in local Edmonton record stores, and online at Kerfmusic, iTunes,eMusic, Rhapsody, Napster, and Amazon MP3. As well, the album has recieved airplay on Alberta public radio station CKUA and various campus radio stations around Canada, reaching no. 1 on the CKXU Lethbridge charts for the week ending July 29/08, and no. 3 on the CJSR Edmonton charts for the week ending May 27/08.
