Canadian composer

Originally from White Rock, British Columbia, Canadian composer Howard Bashaw is a graduate of the University of British Columbia (DMA, 1989). Appointed in 1993, he is currently Professor of Music at the University of Alberta where he teaches composition, orchestration, theory and analysis. Prior to this he taught at the University of British Columbia and at l'Université Canadienne en France.

The piano has emerged as a central focus within his compositional output, with two of his landmark works for solo piano, 15 for Piano and Form Archimage, included on the Centrediscs CD (2015). The CD is titled after 15 for Piano (2012), a piece co-commissioned through the Canada Council for the Arts by Roger Admiral, Winston Choi, Douglas Finch, Corey Hamm and Kyoko Hashimoto.

Working in the acoustic medium, Bashaw has composed for a range of diverse ensembles including: the Hard Rubber Orchestra, Vancouver New Music, New Music Concerts, Société de musique contemporaine du Québec, Duo Kovalis, East-West Quartet, Standing Wave, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Hammerhead Consort, Now Age Orchestra, Duo Majoya, Continuum Ensemble (London), and the Augustana Choir. In addition, Bashaw has composed extensively for solo piano, with his works having appeared in various national and international piano performance competitions.

Individual performers featured in premiere performances and/or recordings include: Roger Admiral (piano), Trevor Brandenburg (percussion), Kathleen Corcoran (soprano), Marc Couroux (piano), Douglas Finch (piano), Marnie Giesbrecht (organ), Niek de Groot (double bass), Corey Hamm (piano), David Harding (viola), Philip Hornsey (percussion), Tatjana Kukoc (guitar), Giorgio Magnanensi (conductor, video), Dennis Miller (tuba), Barbara Pritchard (piano), Ken Read (trombone), Yan Sallafranque (tuba), Darren Salyn (percussion), Joachim Segger (piano), Haley Simons (piano), Allen Stiles (piano), William Street (saxophone), Alain Trudel (trombone), Russell Whitehead (trumpet) and Cameron Wilson (violin).

Bashaw’s works have been performed across Canada, in the USA, Australia and Europe. With earlier broadcasts occurring most notably on CBC’s Two New Hours, more recent broadcasts have occurred on a range of national and international programs. He has received commissions through the Canada Council for the Arts, CBC Radio Music, and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. Found on the Arktos label, his CD releases include: Hard Rubber, Hard Elastic (2008), Form Archimage(2004), and BASHAW (2000). Bashaw is a member of the Canadian League of Composers (CLC) and the Canadian Music Centre (CMC).
