Helena Magerowski

Edmonton’s lady of jazz emerges – Seemingly plucked from the roaring speakeasies of the hot jazz era, Helena Magerowski graces the stage with a confidence and allure that’s built her a reputation as Edmonton’s lady of jazz. Driven by a fated desire to perform, Helena began her musical career at the age of four, training in both classical voice and piano. After graduating from the MacEwan Music Program, she quickly found her own place in Edmonton’s music scene as a rising jazz star. Helena developed an impressive range, both vocally and musically, after performing in groups that range from big bands, country and pop to jazz quartets, reggae and musical theatre.

With nearly 20 years of experience, Helena is now a professional vocalist, pianist, composer, arranger and successful entrepreneur in musical instruction. After travelling throughout Canada, US and various parts of Europe and the Caribbean, Helena is now venturing into the next stage of her career with her first CD release.

Helena’s debut entitled Possibilities, a true labour of love, is perhaps best described in the words of jazz legend Billie Holiday: “People don't understand the kind of fight it takes to record what you want to record the way you want to record it.” When Helena ventured into the studio, she came armed with a clear vision for her first musical offering: Absolutely no fillers.

Helena crafted a 10 song album that challenged and inspired her as an artist. Possibilities spotlights a sweetly charming voice that hints at flirty, if not sinfully seductive, side to Helena. Part of the allure of her debut album is the pleasantly surprising way she recreates well-known jazz classics in style that can only be described as “uniquely Helena.” It’s something that has caught the attention of Magic 99 program director Kurt Leavins:

“Helena Magerowski’s new CD “Possibilities” has a great deal of variety, in terms of genre. She passes from smooth, to Jazzy, to funky. But Helena’s consistent phrasing and her truly great Edmonton-based band allow those individual songs to hang together very nicely, as a cohesive body of work. The standout tracks are her original composition Hold Me, and an inventive interpretation of 10CC’s I’m Not in Love. In terms of over-all sound, if you think a cross between Carol Welseman and Molly Johnson, you will have Helena’s sound in your head.”

Other standout songs include the title track, Possibilities, which exudes with emotional exuberant and gospel-like accents, This Masquerade that sizzles with flamenco flair and the throw back cover of Georgy Porgy that comes to life with the upbeat elements of barbershop and call-and-answer.

Helena’s originals (Possibilities, One Chance, Hold Me and Give Back) enlisted the help of two of Edmonton’s finest: Renowned producer and musician Andrew Glover collaborated with Helena on Hold Me, Give Back and One Chance and pianist Chris Andrew co-wrote Possibilities and Give Back.

Helena has already begun work on her follow up album, hinting that we’ve only just cracked the surface of what Edmonton’s lady of jazz will bring.
