Joanna Borromeo

Joanna Borromeo (pronounced “Boro-mayo”) is currently one of Canada's best-kept secrets in the genres of soul, r&b and jazz. But not for long. After spending nearly a decade developing on stage as a keyboard player and backup singer for numerous touring Canadian acts, it’s easy to recognize that she is an individual of true talent, worthy of the international stage.

Her sophomore album, Kaleidoscope, has gained huge recognition in Canada since its release in March 2013. The record received a nomination for Urban Recording of the Year from the Western Canadian Music Awards and, most recently, a JUNO Award nomination for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. She's an inspiring musician to those who know and follow her, considering that she's achieved this much since becoming an independent solo artist in 2009.

Insightful lyrics with 'jazzified', soulful vocals are the foundation of Joanna Borromeo's music. Propelled by funk-infused backbeat grooves and bass lines, what Joanna creates with her band is an architecture of sound that is both uplifting and stunning. Armed with an unwavering devotion to her craft, in studio or on stage, Joanna brings forth an energy that is as organic as it comes, reinforcing herself as "the artist's artist." (Andrew Craig, CBC Radio).

When it comes to music, Joanna has not left any stone unturned. She spent several years studying to become a classical pianist before moving on to becoming a recognized jazz pianist. When she wasn't performing music, she was attending live shows, buying records and consuming various types of music – all for the reason of cataloging commonalities and contrasts between seemingly unrelated genres. And this is the way Joanna approaches her own music. While there are clear influences in funk and soul in her writing, Joanna has found ways to appeal to her personal appreciation for jazz, folk and pop music as well, and the resulting sound is something mature and compelling for anyone who hears her.

The future is bright for this radiant solo artist. She's already started her new recording project, Letters to the Muse, having released her first single for the project, "Wanna Love You" in February. Her next single, "I Don't Mind" is due to come out early May, with more singles scheduled for release throughout the year. Joanna has always been humble and brave when it comes to managing her independent music career. And now with the new JUNO nomination, it sure is nice to be recognized as one of the elite members of the Canadian music world.
