Souls in Rhythm

As members of Calgary's ever-expanding, dynamic music scene for over 10 years, Souls in Rhythm (a.k.a. SiR) takes elements of classic funk and soul, then blends them with pop, rock and jazz, to deliver its own brand of 'Alberta Funk'. As George Clinton said, "The more one thinks about it, the harder it is to get the feel of funk. It's just done." In this spirit of funk, SiR has focused on its passion for crafting songs and performing with great respect for the fundamentals of soul and funk, but with a strong aim to be forward thinking and honest to their own musical desires. Rather than being impressionists of former artists of the genre, SiR has a modern sound and seeks to innovate and contemporize a musical form they love. Described by Canadian Musician Magazine as "smooth, soulful grooves, melody lines that stay in your head and polished vocals", SiR's music proudly pays homage to tradition, while at the same time expanding boundaries.

After a bit of a hiatus, SiR is very much alive in 2016 and working on their fourth studio record.

SiR has opened for Boyz II Men, Hey Ocean, Colin James, Maestro Fresh Wes, and most recently Common, to name a few...

Upon release of SiR's 2008 sophomore album, "Funklore", and a nomination for a Western Canadian Music Award in 2009. the band began operating nationally and touring much of the country. Soon after, they found themselves being pulled in separate directions due to some tremendous individual opportunities - most notably lead singer, and founder, Scott Henderson's involvement as music arranger/vocal coach on GlobalTV's Canada Sings, and Spencer Cheyne and Craig Newnes' establishment of their recording studio, The Station Recording Co., whose list of recent clients include Makeshift Innocence, Raffi and George Canyon. While pursuing these opportunities, they longed to reconnect and push further and higher. With the release of its new six-song EP, "Another Round", the band's commitment and determination is now to transcend each member's individual successes and elevate SiR to national prominence.

"Our brotherhood and desire to play and create together has never been stronger. We may even be more excited about this record than our first, and we have lofty plans to rally around it and future records for another 10 years," says Henderson.

Their 2012 record, Another Round, delivered songs with lyrics that are straightforward, yet engaging, and a sound influenced by classic funk & soul, mixed with current pop sensibilities. Collaborating with Victoria-bred, Calgary-based hip hop artist, Transit, on the album's title track, SiR shows off its gritty side while examining the struggle artists face in the pursuit of their dreams.

With a live show that delivers "hard-hitting bass, rhythmic guitar, rock-solid drums and dancing keys, all welded together with [Scott] Henderson's polished vocals" (Kamloops This Week), SiR will make you feel its music, inevitably ending with asses shaking on the dance floor!

Having toured independently throughout Canada, SiR has also performed at a variety of high-profile events including the Grey Cup Fan Festival, the Western Canadian Music Awards, the Alberta Summer Games, 2010 Olympics CP Spirit Train Event, JunoFest, The Banff World Television Festival, NXNE, and CapitalEX. SiR's debut album, "Can't Fake the Funk", helped the band win Vibe 98.5's Unsigned Vibe Songwriting Competition in 2006. Along with being nominated for Urban Recording of the Year at the 2009 WCMAs, two songs from SiR's sophomore album, "Funklore", were included on Vol. 2 (2009) and Vol. 3 (2010) of Big Rock Brewery's Untapped Compilation CD's, of which 100,000 copies were distributed across Canada. SiR also had a successful college radio campaign in the U.S. in late 2009, which led to licensing the band's music to several hit MTV shows.
