Maelus is a high-energy, genre-defying musical act formed by Justin “Zion” Minott (Kowalewsky) and Andrew Weisenberger. Originating in Beaumont Alberta, and playing live shows with anywhere between 4- to 11-piece groups, Maelus takes their audience on a sonic journey, playing songs that stretch to many ends of the musical spectrum- offering selections that are at once new, yet familiar. Justin and Andrew, though having grown up most of their lives in Beaumont, did not meet until 2005. They soon realized they were on a similar wave-length, and a bond quickly formed between the two. Beginning by playing cover songs and parodies to entertain local youth groups, they realized they had a strong chemistry in the studio, and though each brought their own wide range (and fairly distinct set) of influences to the table, their stylings were very complimentary when it came to crafting songs together. While refusing to be pigeon-holed into any one musical category, Maelus remains committed to making “music that we like”. If a song isn’t true to them, if it isn’t moving, they won’t play it. While pushing the limits of genre, Maelus aims to pen lyrics that express ideas and emotions that are true, relatable, and honest. Already incorporating rock, rap, R&B, jazz, and classical influences in their music, Maelus is just getting started.
