Spencer Murray and Pipeslinger

Spencer Murray has taken his bagpipes to some interesting places in his life. At 14 he piped down Main Street in Inuvik NWT, at 15 his pipe band won the under 18 world championships in Glasgow, Scotland and more recently he performed with Grammy winner Carlos Nunez at the Edmonton Folk Festival. He’s also played for the queen and was once (accidentally) body checked by Anson Carter while piping the Edmonton Oilers into an event.

Spencer has also learned the Irish flute and tin whiste from master Sligo musician and Juno winner Loretto Reid as well as studying the uilleann pipes from legendary piper and founding member of Lunasa and At First Light, John McSherry.

In 2012 Spencer released his first album of original celtic music with his band "The Log Drivers". Featuring 2 time Canadian Grand Master champion fiddle player Julie Fitzgerald and guitarist Nate Douglas, the album that featured 7 of Spencer's compositions garnered a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for best instrumental album of the year and was played on radio stations around the world including the BBC.

Spencer has also taken home numerous prizes in solo competition including championships at in both major North American fleadhs where he has won first place in the Flute, Whistle, Duet and miscellaneous instrument categories, a feat no Canadian has ever accomplished.

Currently working towards their debut album, Spencer's new project "Pipeslinger" brings
together some of Canada's finest young folk musicians to play music that's original and
traditional. Performing on flute, tin whistle and up to four different types of bagpipes Spencer Murray has created a sound with Pipeslinger that matches the visceral wildness inherent in the bagpipes. The music spans from centuries old bagpipe tunes to original compositions that test the limits of what flutes and bagpipes can play. The band features Jake Charron on guitar and piano, Keith Rempel on bass, and Dan Stadnicki on drums. It's fast, it's loud and it's a wild ride from start to finish.
