Willie Jones III Quintet

With an unparalleled style of rhythmic expression, drummer Willie Jones III is one of the world's leading jazz drummers. In addition to honoring his monumental influences - the late greats Philly Joe Jones, Art Blakey and Billy Higgins - Jones' bold articulation and constantly innovative sense of swing are results of his life-long musical experience.

Born in Los Angeles, Jones completed his jazz education under the tutelage of the legendary Albert "Tootie" Heath. He went on to co-found the jazz band Black Note in the early 1990s. Following four Black Note recordings, he had sideman gigs with vibraphonist Milt Jackson, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, pianist Horace Silver, and for seven years until 2005, with the Roy Hargrove Quintet.

He has released several recordings as a leader on his own WJ3 Records label. His 2012 disc "Plays the Max Roach Songbook" received a four star Downbeat review. Jim Macnie noted that "Jones is one of the most animated drummers on the New York scene. Long story short, when they set up shop at Columbus Circle last January, they owned this stuff."

Willie Jones III is touring in support of his latest release "Groundwork", also on WJ3 Records.
