James Clarke

A 22 year old pianist, James Clarke is making a name for himself as a brilliant young talent. Combining elements of contemporary jazz, while incorporating sounds of other periods and genres, James’ playing and compositions share a unique voice. Though he his young, his education and experience is immense, and comes through in his mature style of playing.

James began studying piano at age 4, continuing classical training through his childhood, and adding jazz at the age of 14. Already, he’s studied with some of Canada’s biggest names in jazz, including Chris Andrew, Jan Jarcyk, and Andre White. In May 2011, James was one of a select few young jazz musicians chosen internationally to attend the prestigious Workshop for Jazz and Creative Music at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Here, he was fortunate enough to learn from pillars of today’s jazz world such as Geoffrey Keezer, Dave Douglas, Kneebody, and Clarence Penn.

A native of Edmonton, James is currently residing in Montreal, enrolled in his final year of Jazz Performance studies at McGill University. He also composes and performs with the James Clarke Trio, and is the pianist and musical director for gospel singer Vic Ansah, with whom he will be featured on her upcoming album.

James has already released an EP and full-length album, both of which have already garnered positive reviews. His EP Kingsley Crossing was named in 2010 by CKUA Radio’s Tony King as one of his top ten albums of the year. Similarly this year, his first full-length album Durocher Sunrise was named as one of the 2012 Top 10 in Alberta Jazz by the Alberta Music Industry Association.

James channels energy and passion into his music and performances, and is an exciting addition to Canada’s evolving jazz community.
