Maciej Sikala

Maciej Sikala, a tenor, soprano and C melody saxophonist, graduated from Jazz Faculty at the Academy of Music in Katowice in 1987. His major awards include first prize at the International Competition of Jazz Improvisation in Katowice, 1986; "Mateusz 95' awarded by Polish Radio Three; and first place in the Jazz Forum magazine readers poll in the tenor sax category in the years 1995-2005.

He has collaborated with top Polish jazz musicians such as Piotr Wojtasik, Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski, Tomasz Szukalski, Henryk Miskiewicz, Jaroslaw Smietana, Wojciech Karolak, and Leszek Mozdzer. He has also worked with outstanding foreign musicians such as Lester Bowie, Kenny Wheeler, Tim Hagans, Billy Harper, Billy Hart, Joanne Brackeen, David Liebman, Ronnie Burrage, Wayne Dockery, Reggie Workman, and John Betsch.

Maciej Sikala has recorded over forty jazz CDs, four of which under his own name (two of them have been nominated for the Fryderyk Award). He is a lecturer in Jazz Saxophone at the Academy of Music in Gdansk and the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. In addition to his own trio, he has played with the Piotr Wojtasik Quartet, the Leszek Kulakowksi Quartet, and a duet with Bogdan Holownia. Maciej Sikala has performed in Russia, Romania, Germany, Sweden, Bulgaria, France, Israel, Canada, Austria, Moldova, Lithuania, and Bielorussia.
