"Azimuth Theatre creates and presents original Canadian performance that examines society and the human condition with a critical gaze. It reaches audiences not traditionally served by professional theatre for reasons of age, education, or geography with work that evokes discussion of social issues promoting a compassionate perspective towards those affected by those issues."
The Artistic Mission Statement
Azimuth Theatre has 2 distinct profiles for 2 distinct target audiences. What is common between those two profiles is an attention on younger audiences and an absolute insistence on original work featuring local creators.
Mainstream Young Adult
Azimuth is committed to building a profile in Edmonton of independent theatre presented to an audience of young adults. Through work created by the company and through work presented in its performance space The Living Room Play House, Azimuth desires a reputation as a centre for invigorating performance.
Artist In Education
Built upon Azimuth Theatre's original area of activity, this profile is characterized by bold, high energy, high volume (i.e. not boring, not preachy) social action themed plays to adolescent audiences. This area of activity is characterized by the use of theatre as a tool to instigate discussion within communities around stigmatized subjects (e.g. suicide, alcohol & drug use, violence, etc.)
