The Kubasonics are a six-piece group that takes traditional Ukrainian music down a number of unique paths. The band is equally comfortable recreating the sounds of traditional ensembles from the villages of Ukraine, the dance bands of the early 20th century Canadian prairies, performing on unique folk instruments, combining traditional and contemporary styles to create interesting fusions, and performing original material that focuses on Ukrainian Canadian life. Add to this mix: on-stage barbecues, catapulting kubasa, all-around wacky humour and you have a show that you won’t forget.
The Kubasonics have achieved a wide range of success. The group has produced three CDs featuring a unique mix of traditional and original music that has been broadcast on four continents, and they have been featured on television and in films. They’ve performed in concerts and Festivals across North America, have collaborated with other performers and ensembles in unique projects and have received awards for their innovations in traditional music.
Last year they completed a historic tour of Ukraine, where they were the first Canadian act to perform at the prestigious Kriana Mriy Festival in Kyiv. They also rocked a number of clubs across Ukraine and performed at the Taistra Chuhaistra International Music Festival in L’viv and at Vuiko Ivan’s farm in the village of Burdiakivtsi.
