Kate Blechinger

Kate Blechinger is an inventive and charismatic Edmonton based vocalist, composer, and arranger. Originally hailing from Regina, Saskatchewan, Kate takes direct influence from the vast prairie landscapes of her youth to create

expansive, evocative compositions and arrangements for listeners to enjoy. Her stories are laden with imagery, and imbued with a reflective sense reminiscent of iconic singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Kate's "jazz" is the musical equivalent of an artist's palette, and is definitely a hybrid of sorts; she pairs the harmony, instrumentation and improvisation of more traditional jazz forms with the lyricism of modern jazz and folk genres. What results is a music that is personal, poetic, and playful - and one that involves audiences in a truly eclectic musical journey.

Over the past year, Kate was fortunate enough to have received both an Individual Artist Project grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and an Individual Artist grant from the Edmonton Arts Council, and embarked on recording her first record. Kate released her debut album, Under a Dancing Sky, at the Yardbird Suite in November 2018. Under a Dancing Sky was recorded, mixed and produced by Juno Award winning engineer, Paul Johnston, and features innovative folk-jazz arrangements of Joni Mitchell's compositions alongside several of Kate's original songs. This collection of songs is a tribute not only to Joni Mitchell, who celebrated her 75th Birthday this past November, but also to Kate's experiences growing up on the prairies.

Currently, you can find Kate performing around Edmonton with her own group, as well as 1940's close harmony group,The Jivin' Belles, and The Blue Chair house band, Borrowed and Blue. Kate is preparing for a tour across the prairies to support Under a Dancing Sky this fall.
