SLATES was formed in late 2008 by four friends with deep roots in Edmonton, Alberta’s music community. The band clocked a fair number of peculiar international miles—from bus stops and rooftops in Cuba in 2010, to European squats and Bosnian border shakedowns in 2011—before eventually hitting Canada from coast-to-salty-coast in 2012.

SLATES have released four seven inches and two full-length records to date, most recently 2012’s Wangwee EP (Debt Offensive). Wangwee (a particularly mangled attempt at pronouncing Yngwie Malmsteen’s name) is a collection of some of SLATES’ most fiery and melodic songs to date, informed by day-to-day life in the petro-state prairie province they call home.

“…pressing and impassioned vocalism come together with the raw boundless punk energy only a band this experienced and this long acquainted with one another could be counted on to produce” –ARGUE JOB MUSIC BLOG

New single “Vérité weaves the story of Marguerite Pitre (the last woman executed in Canada), Joan of Arc, and long-lost reels of foreign cinema. It was recorded live off the floor in an old jam space and mixed by co-conspirator Jesse Gander [Japandroids, White Lung]. The song is a glimpse at what lies ahead, as the group prepares to head to Chicago this summer to record their third full-length with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio Studio.

As a D.I.Y. band in the frosty isolation of the Canadian prairies, SLATES continues to forge new trails. This spring finds the band heading to all corners of Western Canada–trekking through the prairies, traversing the Rockies, and eventually mushing their way up North for their first show in a Territory at Whitehorse’s Sunstroke Festival.
