Theatre Network is pleased to present the World Premiere of The Empress & The Prime Minister by Edmonton playwright Darrin Hagen (The Edmonton Queen, Tornado Magnet).

On the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in Canada, Darrin Hagen premieres a new play about the life of drag queen / activist ted northe, also known as the Empress of Canada. Mr. northe's activism draws a young Minister of Justice, Pierre Trudeau to his side, and the two form a remarkable connection that changed Canada.

"As we enter the 50th anniversary of decriminalization, it's important to remember the contributions of the dynamic and brave LGBTQ activists who risked so much to fight for a freedom they had never experienced themselves," playwright Darrin Hagen says. "Writing this play made me very aware of the privilege of my timing in history, and how precarious our human rights are, even today."

Featuring Darrin Hagen as ted northe and Joey Lespérance as Pierre Trudeau, The Empress & The Prime Minister is a hilarious and loving story about two men that helped usher in a new era for LGBTQ rights in Canada.
