Edmonton, AB – September 14, 2010 – YEG Live proudly received a $6000 cash prize from the City of Edmonton in its Apps4Edmonton contest for being the best web & mobile app that positively supports economic diversification as part of the City's strategic growth plan.
YEG Live is Edmonton's authority for trustworthy and accurate information about the vibrant local live music scene, including artist profiles, venue information, and event listings. Unlike other listings calendars, YEG Live carefully curates its information catalogue to maintain accuracy and completeness. The system currently lists hundreds of events each month and is used by thousands of weekly visitors to the YEG Live website. YEG Live content also reaches thousands more Edmontonians through syndicated print outlets, online properties, and social media.
Edmontonians appreciate how easy it is to find out about local events and discover musicians, but they also love being able to buy e-tickets online from YEG Live for a low e-ticket fee of $1.99. E-tickets are conveniently and securely delivered as 2-dimensional barcodes via email, which venue operators can then scan and validate using any smartphone, iPod Touch, or computer. For venue operators, e-ticketing removes the hassle of ticket consignment, hand-to-hand delivery, and ‘will-call’ lists, resulting in lower operational costs and more satisfied customers.
“We are excited to be named the best app in the economic development and diversity category. As the sole commercial app to be awarded a prize, we see this step as recognition of the importance of the local arts and live music economy in the long-term sustainability of Edmonton's economic growth,” says Chris Martyniuk, co-founder and president of YEG Live's parent company, Canadian Live Productions, Inc. “We are here to challenge the status quo, lower costs and create new opportunities, and make it easier to bring more Edmontonians through the doors to local live music performances.”
Canadian Live Productions will soon announce the public launch of a related website and app, YEG Arts, which will provide listings and e-ticketing for a broader array of arts, cultural, and entertainment events in the Edmonton region, including theatre, film, dance, and literary arts events. Though the website has yet to be officially launched, the YEG Arts system is already in place and provides data to the 2010 Edmonton International Film Festival iPhone app.
Co-founder Cameron Gertz explains, “The goal is to use our locally developed technology to remove barriers and increase opportunities for all artists and supporting venues so they can operate more broadly within their local market. Over the long term, if we can help uncover pent-up demand and connect more patrons with artists, our efforts will enhance livability in Edmonton, support a vibrant and diverse cultural scene, and contribute to our shared economic prosperity.”
