Convocation Hall

Convocation Hall is a small gem of a performance space. Constructed about 1912, it holds a maximum of about 426 people, in a rectangular room with balcony on three sides. Most seating is fixed, theatre style. The venue is most suitable for recitals and chamber music ensembles, although the largerensembles also perform there. The stage has been somewhat expanded by the addition of a lower apron at the front, about 1 foot below the main platform, which helps accommodate orchestra size performances. See photos here. There are three pianos in Con Hall - a small upright on the main floor, and two 9-foot Steinway grand pianos on the stage. The New York Steinway was refurbished in 2007. The Hamburg Steinway also available. Convocation Hall is also home to the Department's fortepiano, harpsichord, and Casavant organ. Lighting in Con Hall is restricted to a basic stage wash, suitable for musical performance, with only very limited ability to customize the lighting for theatrical reasons. Con Hall does have built-in multi-media presentation equipment available, and the capability to reinforce sound as required for performances or meetings. Full recording services are available in Con Hall.
