Field Assembly

Adam Fox needs a good night’s sleep. Night terrors, sleep paralysis, insomnia, waking hallucinations – all nocturnal maladies Fox has dealt with for as long as he can remember. And while these issues are occasionally problematic for the songwriter, he was fascinated with the blurry line between waking and unwaking life. He didn’t intend to write a concept album, recording live takes in his father’s barren cabin floor, but, spare and strange, his sleeplessness crept into his songs, producing a record about sleep, dream life, abandonment, and transcendence.

With skeletons of songs in hand, Fox headed south to Toronto, bringing the tracks to his friend, producer/multi-instrumentalist Dean Drouillard (Sarah Harmer, Royal Wood, Matt Barber). Over the next five months, the duo experimented, employing diverse influences from pop music to flesh out the subtle strangeness of the music. They sought out talented friends to contribute, including Colin Huebert (Siskiyou, Great Lake Swimmers), Joshua Van Tassel (David Myles, Selina Martin), and Bryden Baird (Feist). The realization of these songs is Narco: a small collection of powerful yet atmospheric songs, diverse in sound and lyric.

In Narco, lions face off with Christians, orthodoxies are considered in fragile moments but then abandoned, homesickness is a lover at the end of an affair, self protection is a mythical beast, a quiet protest is heard like distant thunder, and entire empires become dinner table disputes.

Lyle Adam Fox goes to sleep at night in Edmonton but has also been found to slumber over the street sounds of downtown Toronto, Windsor, and before that, a family farm in the small Southwestern Ontario town of Colchester South, where he was raised.

Fox’s songs have drawn critical praise, and comparisons have ranged from Red House Painters to Califone, Neil Young to Giant Sand.
