Citie Ballet is Edmonton's ballet company. Each year, it mounts a vibrant season of classical and neo-classical ballet, modern and contemporary dance over the span of three productions.
Under artistic director François Chevennement, the company showcases traditional and modern ballets. It also commissions ambitious and innovative original work, and collaborates with other city dance companies. Recent original productions include 2010's new interpretation of Carmen, featuring a contemporary guitar concerto, and 2011's Murder at the Strand, a multimedia blend of ballet and can-can, based on an unsolved murder at Edmonton's famed Strand Theatre, and set in the tumultuous era between vaudeville and cinema.
Each summer, Citie Ballet runs a two-week intensive dance school for dancers aged 10 or more. These summer workshops in ballet, repertoire, choreography and modern dance are taught by Citie Ballet's artistic director, with assistance from noted guest instructors drawn from throughout the world of ballet.
Citie Ballet dancers also deliver several special-request performances each year (benefits, galas and community events).
The company's performances are staged at the Timms Centre for the Arts at the University of Alberta. Heated underground parking is available.
