Old Strathcona Foundation

The Old Strathcona Foundation preserves, protects and promotes the historical story of Old Strathcona including the celebration of the heritage of the area and the stewardship of its historical assets for a vibrant community.

Strathcona is one of Edmonton’s oldest and most unique communities. The community developed between 1891 and 1912 on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River, at the north terminus of the early railroad and overland trail routes to Calgary and the mid-point of the principal east-west roadway, Whyte Avenue. South Edmonton (1891-1899) became the Town of Strathcona (1899-1907) and the City of Strathcona(1907-1912) when it was amalgamated with the City of Edmonton. The area had a commercial and government centre along Whyte Avenue, with residential development to the north, railroad related industries to the south, and mills and brickyards in the river valley. The official boundaries of the OSF are from 101 Street to 106 Street, 80 Avenue to Saskatchewan Drive. However, the OSF is involved with many programs and events which fall outside the boundaries.

History is important as it allows future generations to understand where they came from and what it took to build the communities they enjoy today. The Old Strathcona Foundation is not only about the past – it is about the future. Membership in the Old Strathcona Foundation not only helps monetarily but it provides strength to our voice on issues which jeopardize the preservation of this important and vital community.
