Salsabor

Salsabor is a hip new Latin band that began in Edmonton about a year ago by director, arranger and vocalist/keyboard player Frankie Hidalgo. Frankie Hidalgo, graduate of the Grant MacEwan music program in Jazz Piano studies, has been in the Latin music scene for 7 years playing with local latin bands in the province. Being around all sorts of Latin music from Salsa, to folk, to Mariachi music, Frankie’s influences are seen in the repertoire and arrangements he makes. His major influences have been Oscar D’Leon Eddie Palmieri, Michel Camilo, El Gran Combo, Tito Puente, etc.

Salsabor is better known for its Salsa, Merengue and Cumbias but they are all also prolific jazz players and like to have the freedom of expressing and playing that genre of music that is not so frequently played locally. They bring a fresh new flavour to the latin scene with young, talented musicians full of energy and dedication from all parts of the world (El Salvador, Colombia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Venezuela, Poland etc.) many of whom have also studied in Grant MacEwan or have learnt their trade in their own countries or have been in the Latin music scene in Alberta. Their dedication and commitment to what they do as professional musicians is what sets them apart from the rest of the bands in Alberta. They bring a new and different meaning to the genre of Latin music with a sizzling, a different style amongst the rest and an infectious “tumbao” that will keep your feet moving. Salsabor is Western Canada’s finest latin band representing the pride of latin people and most importantly, keeping the tradition of latin music living onto the next generations to come.
