Brett Nelson

Brett Nelson is an independent singer-songwriter and guitarist who has been traveling and writing songs for the better part of a decade. His lyricism is a careful, yet visceral weave of small moments and essential human truths. His intricate blues-infused fingerpicking work and lived-in voice provoke a calling to influences including Greg Brown, Mississippi John Hurt, Richard Thompson and Bert Jansch while his true-blue stories and road-worn professionalism make him an original voice in Canadian folk music.

Although notorious for home-recordings with a very honest aesthetic, he has taken on a few of Winnipeg's best young roots players as his backing band and recently had a song produced by Austin-based songwriter Joe Pug.

He has traveled by car, van, train, bicycle, thumb and plane to hundreds of venues across Canada and the US, including performances at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, aboard the VIA rail passenger trains, on stage alongside the great cowboy songwriter Ian Tyson and at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
