Folk Jacksonville, FL
Walter Parks

"Walter Parks is an extraordinary singer whose songs can break your heart as well as get you dancing. Lyrical and political, personal and otherworldly at the same time, transcendent as well as down to earth, Walter is a musical treasure, an artist of the highest caliber. To hear him is to be lifted into a mystical sphere. I adore him." - Judy Collins

Veteran blues guitarist Walter Parks has built an international career as the lead guitarist for Woodstock legend Richie Havens, half of the folk-duo the Nudes, and leader of the southern swamp-blues group Swamp Cabbage. After thirty years in the music industry, he marked his debut as a solo artist with the release of his self-titled album in December 2011. Most recently Walter released a solo live acoustic CD, Cathedral.

Inspired by the swampy gospel blues that wails from storefront churches and roadhouses in and around the southeast Georgia low country, Parks' album is full of boot-stomping, guitar-strumming tunes that explore matters of the soul and spirit, built upon a foundation of jazz and folk.

"A listen to Parks' soulful Americana rock is to be immersed in warm guitar melodies, smoky vocals and troubadour narratives that gather strength with age." ' WNYC

In an odd way the northeast Florida swamps and marshes where composer/guitarist Walter Parks grew up remind him of New York City where he now lives. In both, a well-needed and reassuring tranquility is always there for those who seek beyond the ever-present tension. Swamp by Chandelier, Walter Parks' new one-man solo guitar production is a soundtrack to the swamp ' a metaphor for everyday life, in celebration of beauty and edge living side-by-side. Swamp by Chandelier is mostly a presentation of Parks' own compositions interwoven with a few related and inspired exceptions. After researching the Library of Congress' historic music collection Parks transcribed and modernized the hollers and reels of the "cracker" folk who lived in the Okefenokee Swamp before it became a national wildlife refuge.

In addition to his recent solo effort and composing for tv and film, Parks remains the driving force behind Swamp Cabbage, the group he formed in 2001 as a means of exploring his southern musical influences. Parks, along with band mate Jagoda (drums), have released three CDs, Honk (2006 independent), Squeal (2008 on ZOHO Roots), and Drum Roll Please (2012) and the latest release Jive (2016).
